WELL THIS IS awkward.
It looks as if Germany may have celebrated their fourth World Cup win just a little too hard and broken the trophy.
According to the German FA (DFB) president Wolfgang Niersbach the damage was done as the German team partied in Rio after their extra-time win over Argentina.
The 63-year old told German newspaper Die Welt:
“At one point, a small piece was chipped but do not worry as we have specialists who can fix it.”
The identity of the culprit – and nobody knows what Rihanna was doing at the time – remains a mystery despite what Niersbach refers to as an “intensive investigation.”
Luckily for all involved, the trophy ‘Die Nationalmannschaft’ were celebrating with was just a very realistic replica.
The original – made of 18-carat gold and worth over €7.3 million – which Philipp Lahm lifted in the Estádio Maracanã was returned to FIFA shortly after the presentation.
